When I woke up this morning it felt like -17 degrees outside! Moving to Chicago, I had heard the winters here were rough so I decided to get some new winter essentials last year. I live in the suburbs so I don’t necessarily need an intense parka like I would living in the city (although after these 2 degree days, I am rethinking it for dog walks!). I like the simplistic look of the Eddie Bauer coats (like this) with a fur hood and it is good quality at a good price. This coat is warm, durable and not too fitted so I can fit bulky sweaters under it when it is cold like it is today. If you are looking to invest in a winter coat, I have heard Canada Goose Parkas are AMAZING.
You know you live in Chicago when…you ask for Sorel boots for Christmas and you’re SO excited to get them! Robert got me these Joac of Arctic boots in the Elk color (on sale) last year and I can’t imagine wearing anything else in winter. These are so warm and cozy, waterproof, and did I mention they are so cute!? If you are in the market for new snow boots, look no further. Sorel is my top winter essential and they have a range of styles and colors to pick from.
The best way to stay warm is with layers. This tissue turtleneck from J.Crew is a main winter essential for layering. Lately I have been wearing this Patagonia fleece over it but you can wear it under a sweater, cute flannel shirt, or on its own with jeans. Add a colorful pom hat (like this, this or this) and some gloves or cashmere mittens and you are ready to hit the cold. I also wear earmuffs if my hair style doesn’t work with a hat.
