One of my favorite parts about our trip to Hawaii was the Waimea Valley hike to a waterfall. The landscapes, colors, and sounds of this protected botanical garden and valley were breathtaking. While it’s not the largest waterfall in Oahu, this North Shore gem is one not to be missed. The walk is about 1.5 miles round trip and not strenuous so you can enjoy all the nature and wildlife. You will see historical structures as well as a plethora of Polynesian plants, trees, hibiscus and bamboo.
What to Wear on a Hawaiian Waterfall Hike
I wore a white t-shirt, jean shorts , sneakers and this packable straw hat. I considered wearing a bathing suit because you can swim at the end but the water was too cold in the winter. If you are going in the summer, you can jump on in! You don’t have to wear sneakers because it is not a strenuous walk and there is a main path; However, I found it was best and most comfortable. I love traveling with these lightweight Nike Air Max’s which I have in black but I love them in other neutrals like light pink, gray, and beige.
I kept stopping to take pictures of all the flowers and trees throughout this waterfall hike. I found Waimea Valley to be one of the most peaceful and spiritual places I had ever been to. We went when the park first opened so it wasn’t crowded (we were actually one of the few people there) and then went to Waimea Bay Beach which is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Stay tuned for a travel guide to the North Shore in where I will talk about all of our favorite places in Oahu, Hawaii!
